Abstract
Provide a brief summary of how AI supports you in the task/project/activity in your role in 4-5 sentences.
- What was the problem or opportunity? When students are working on writing assignments, it can be difficult to provide individual feedback to all students during the writing process.
- What AI tool did you use? School AI, specifically Assistants, Essay Grading Assistant.
- What was the goal? To provide individual feedback to students during the writing process so that they can identify specific places for improvement.
AI Integration
- AI Tool(s) Used: School AI (Essay Grading Assistant)
- Intended Outcome of AI Use: To provide specific, individual feedback to utilize during student writing conferencing.
- AI Literacy or Skill Developed:
- HOW are you interacting with AI in this project? Using School AI’s Essay Grading Assistant by prompting it to give individual and specific feedback on their writing. It is beneficial to give the assistant a pdf of the rubric and give it specifics like the student’s grade level.
- Which ISTE Educator/Leader/Coach standards are being developed by the delivery of this unit?
- 2.5.a. Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.
- 2.6.a. Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.
Implementation Details:
- Step-by-step breakdown of how the AI tool was used: Using the Assistants feature on School AI, users can go to Essay Grading Assistant. From there, teachers can upload a rubric (save as a PDF first) and ask the prompt generator to provide specific feedback paragraph by paragraph in student friendly language or grade level feedback.
- Who was involved (teachers, students, support staff): Teachers (and students at a later time)
- Frequency of use (one-time, daily, ongoing): Can be used as often as teachers see fit
Impact:
- Evidence of outcomes (qualitative or quantitative): The potential outcomes would be students taking the provided feedback to make edits and revisions in order to achieve higher writing scores.
- Changes to workflow, instruction, or student outcomes: Typically when teachers provide students with feedback at the end of a writing assignment, students are less likely to reflect on it. By providing more immediate personal feedback during the writing process, students will be more likely to make revisions in a more meaningful way and hopefully, students will progress and grow as writers. By giving students feedback during the writing process, teachers will be able to then reduce comments made during the actual grading and hopefully reduce the time spent grading..
Lessons Learned:
- What went well? By asking more specific questions in CHAT, we were able to receive specific comments for each paragraph/suggestions for improvement on an essay.
- Challenges encountered: Received general feedback at first. Prompting the bot which grade level you need or specifics is helpful for more valuable feedback.
- Recommendations for others replicating this use case: The more specific your questions are, the better outcome there is.
